All growers know how important it is to track weather conditions on their farm. Planting and harvesting scheduling, yield predictions, water/irrigation management, pest and disease mitigation and prevention, and financial planning are all greatly impacted by weather events. With the effects of climate change leading to less predictable weather and more ‘extreme’ and ‘unprecedented’ weather events, getting accurate weather information as soon as possible can have significant effects on how growers react to protect their crops.

Relying on historic weather patterns to predict what will happen in a season is becoming increasingly difficult. The USDA recently released a study showing the predicted shifting of plant hardiness, heat zones, growing degree days and drought severity through this centuring and the results are significant. Zone shifting has been noted by environmentalists and farmers for years and has already impacted planting dates, water and energy costs and pest and disease damage and the changes are not expected to slow. Understanding these changes will be key for long-term farm planning as it will impact things like crop insurance availability, the costs of growing and the viability of growing certain crops in certain regions.

Weather tracking will not solve the challenges of shifting climates, but on the ground, a big part of understanding the shifting norms for growing will rely on accurate monitoring of weather season over season. This article includes a round-up of weather tracking apps, and API weather data services for growers to help them get current information and build historic weather records to relate to farm practices, and yields. This can help adapt new standards for changing conditions.

Top 8 Weather Tracking Mobile Apps for Growers

Weather tracking apps are default apps on most phones, but not all contain enough local information for effective use in agriculture. Croptracker has previously made lists of weather apps favored by farmers. Since our last article, several apps services has ceased to exist and new ones have landed on the market so we have updated our list below:

My Radar

My Radar, as the name would suggest, focuses on accurate and consistently updated radar mapping. It includes several view options including satellite and topographic maps. It makes use of its network of users to include images of current weather conditions and displays more unique information like cloud cover, fronts and road weather. There are also options to enable additional aviation information which can be useful for growers making use of aerial sprayers or drones to survey their crops.

Accuweather:

Weather Tracking API connections for Growers

Weather information is much more valuable to growers when it is connected to farm activity records and crop information. API weather information integrations can pull specific weather data into ERP / record-keeping software so it can be related to farm information. Many large scale growers will choose to integrate weather data with planting, growth rate and yield records to help optimize practices season over season and to track patterns in their operations. API weather data integration can help speed up record-keeping for pesticide and fertilizer applications by automatically pulling required wind direction/speed and temperature information and linking it with application records. Setting up this integration will require some tech team members or contracted software developer support. We have compiled a shortlist of trusted weather data API providers below, including government weather data API’s from the Canadian and USA governments. We have flagged paid vs free services and have specified geographic support regions and data sources where possible.

As climate change continues to make weather patterns more unpredictable, reliable weather tracking tools are becoming essential for growers. Utilizing weather apps, and API services can help growers stay informed about current conditions, plan their activities better, and build historical weather data to adapt their farming practices. By choosing the right tools growers can gain the insights they need to help protect their crops and ensure sustainable farm management in the face of changing climates.
